Tips: VFD derating on altitude & temperature
While derating variable frequency drives (VFD) for altitude varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, as long as you are de-rating the VFD to meet the environment (temperature & altitude) you really shouldn't have a problem finding a VFD. I use a factor of 1% per every 328 feet above 3280 feet. Using that method, you will need to oversize the VFD by 20% to properly work over 10,000 feet, for example, you should go to a 5hp VFD instead of a 3hp VFD for that altitude. That, of course, doesn't account for the extreme cold temperatures which will be a problem, in such condition the operating and storage temperatures can be overcome by proper thermal management like putting a heater into the enclosure of the VFD. The storage temperature is about 20 degrees F lower that what is recommended by most VFD manufacturers but it may be tolerated.
